How and why did you first suspect your stepdad Jack Tarrance was the Zodiac Killer?

I believe it all started while Dennis was watching a documentary on Zodiac, he began to put dates and places together.

This documentary was called "CASE REOPENED" by Lawerence Block. I was at my sisters house in Olympia Wa in the summer of 2000, I was getting ready to take a job as a correctional officer at this time. I was watching the Learning Channel one night when this documentary came on, and during the show they started naming the time and locations of some of the murders, and the writings, composites etc, all matched Jack perfectly. I stayed up late that night because the show was going to be on again, and this time I had a pen and paper taking notes as I watched it the second time, I knew at this point who the man was they were looking for was. If I had any doubt about Jack being the zodiac, that little bit of doubt was gone after my phone conversations with him in 2001.

Dennis, were you totally shocked to think that your stepfather might be the notorious Zodiac killer, or was there a part of you that always suspected something wasn't quite right with him?

My impression od Jack was either he was a low key quiet guy that had some sort of a low grade tension about him that a person could feel when in the same room, or he was an aggressive boisterous loud person who always had something to say about something. Was it either one of these?

It was no secret in our family that Jack had killed people before, he even talked about it at times, but when I realized he was the Zodiac it was quite shocking. The part that was most shocking wasn't that Jack was a killer because I already knew that, but the person I had grown to know didn't exist, it was all just an act.

Diamond D,

Jack mostly kept to himself unless he was drinking, that is when his dark sense of humor would come out.

I grew up with an alcoholic father. My experience has been that -- although my dad was in general an angry person -- alcohol "turned up the volume," so that he expressed his anger more intensely. I think that alcohol intoxication brings out people’s natural tendencies in the expression of anger, especially those who tend to be angry anyway.

I read somewhere that alcohol is involved in half of all murders, rapes and assaults. Do you think that alcohol might have played a part in Jack's behavior, Dennis?

I do believe that alcohol brought out the monster in Jack. This is probably the only photo of the monster that Jack turned into when he was drinking.

That is such a strange photo. Can you tell the story behind this shot, when was it, who took it, what was Jack doing, where you Dennis there in the room, how old is Jack here. It is a very interesting shot.

I would love to know the story behind the photo, too, Dennis. Whenever I see that picture, I think about that one song you did about Jack -- remember?

I remember the day this photo was taken, it was at our house in Mt. Aukum Ca. in 1974. Mt. Aukum is about 15 miles south of Placerville. The day this photo was taken Jack was working on this old green van that he had bought. The van was up on blocks and Jack was underneath it. I remember seeing Jack roll out from underneath it and it fell almost hitting Jack. Later that night a few relatives had came over and it turned into a drinking party and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Then out of nowhere there were several gunshots right outside the house and everyone panicked. Then the front door opened and jack came walking in with his rifle (M-1 carbine) and he told everyone to leave right now, and they did. When everyone was gone I remember him telling my mother he had to shoot the neighbors dogs because they were trying to kill the chickens. Then he walked over and turned the music up loud and started dancing by himself, this is when my mother must have taken this photo.

Look at the phone on the sofa... Jack has it off the hook.

Snowbirdpi,

When I began searching for evidence, I was looking for one thing that could prove Jack was not the Zodiac. I knew If I could find just one thing placing Jack somewhere else on one of the days the murders took place, end of story. The more I looked for that one piece of evidence that proved Jack wasn't Zodiac, the more I found proving he was.
