So many killers start out by torturing and/or killing animals, so I am not surprised Jack killed the neighbor's dogs. Dennis, do you know of any other instances when Jack hurt or killed animals?

There have been a few times Jack has killed animals in the past.

Right now I am on my way out the door and will be gone for about a week, but when I return I will tell you about Jack killing animals.

You're right, Snowbird. Here are some examples:

Ted Bundy - As a child, Bundy -- who went on to become a serial killer and rapist -- witnessed his father’s violence toward animals, and he himself subsequently tortured animals.

Jeffrey Dahmer - This serial killer and cannibal impaled the heads of dogs and cats on sticks.

David Berkowitz - "Son of Sam", who plead guilty to 13 murder and attempted murder charges, shot a neighbor’s Labrador retriever.

Henry Lee Lucas - By thirteen, one of his favorite activities was slitting the throats of small animals, then sexually violating the corpses.

Anyone know of other cases of serial killers who abused animals?

Thanks for the link, Snowbirdpj. Very informative.

I should clarify that when I talk about a connection between killing animals and a mental disturbance that leads to killing people, I'm not talking about sport hunting. I'm talking about killing animals in a particularly cruel and torturous way or in a non-sport setting (such as Jack marching next door and blowing away the neighbor's pet).

A little more info about the hog incident... After Jack left home, he just kind of drifted from place to place, picking up odd jobs where he could. At age 16, Jack found himself in New Mexico, where he was able to find work on a hog farm. One day when he was slopping the hogs, Jack got knocked down. Instead of getting up and brushing himself off, or even saying a curse word or two, he had a very different reaction: he decided to kill all fifty pigs in a cruel way. I listened to the recording of Jack describing the incident to Dennis. He talked about how he wired the trough with a live electrical line. He laughed heartily as he told Dennis about it. Imagine how horrifying that would be... the sounds, the smell... any normal person would have been appalled. But Jack relished every moment -- you could hear it in his voice on the recording.

Here is an excerpt from a research article that furthers the point of animal abuse being a pre-curser.
According to research, serial killers exhibit what is known as the 'Triad of Warning Signs in Childhood.'1
Indicators include:
* Fire starting, invariably just for the thrill of destroying things

* Cruelty to Animals: Most children can be cruel to animals, such as pulling the legs off of spiders, but future serial killers often kill larger animals, like dogs and cats, and frequently for their solitary enjoyment rather than to impress peers.

* Bedwetting beyond the age when children normally grow out of such behavior.
One of society's more notorious serial killers, Jeffrey Dahmer explained that wanted to remove 'free will' from his victims so that they would stay with him. In his past, he suffered from abandonment and was afraid of loss and any social upheaval. Another one of his extremely displaced characteristics was that he suffered from low self-esteem. His parents divorced during his teens, and when he did go to college, he performed badly.

Upon examination of three psychologists, Dahmer was found to be manipulative, resistant and evasive.2 Further studies of Dahmer revealed that he could not tolerate rejection or abandonment; and that control was the number one factor for him. One clue to his unusually sick behavior was that even in his relationships, Dahmer did not gratify his sexual partners - instead, Dahmer always expected to be pleased by them.

'Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Andrew Cunanan, David 'Son of Sam' Berkowitz, and Albert 'Boston Strangler' DeSalvo were ALL cruel to animals before they started hurting people.'6 Subsequently, killer teenagers Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold (Columbine HS), and Kip Kinkel were also known for their past history of animal cruelty. In the study from of

'The Care of pets within child abusing families,' presented by DeViney & Lockwood, 88 percent of the homes were animal abuse had occurred, children were also abused.
